Common Swimming Pool Problems and Solutions

Most of the common problems associated with swimming pools can be prevented or controlled through regular care and maintenance. However, the servicing tasks are not foolproof. Therefore you may experience some setbacks in terms of the pool's cleanliness and water 'health'. It is recommended for you to consult a pool expert if there is an unknown problem to prevent escalation.

Moreover, you should collect samples of the pool water for periodic assessment in a specialist laboratory. Here are some of the universal swimming pool issues and simple solutions:

Algae Infestation

The growth of algae is probably the most common problem linked to swimming pools. Varying types of algae will be manifested in different ways and the species may diverge according to the local area. Green algae are widespread and they often turn the pool water greenish and murky.

There might also be visible growth of the living material. Black algae appear in form of black spots at the bottom of the pool and mustard algae will turn the water yellowish-green. The infestation primarily occurs as a result of low sanitiser quantities, poor water balance and limited circulation in the pool system.

To resolve the problem, you should perform shock treatment in higher levels than the regular standard. In addition, treat the pool with algaecide and clean the pool system thoroughly.

Clogged Filter

The swimming pool is normally exposed to varying external conditions therefore debris can build up. It is important to skim the pool after every couple of days to prevent accumulation of the material. If the leaves, bugs and twigs are allowed to amass, soak in moisture and sink, they will cause serious filter clogging.

You should clean out the feature thoroughly or engage a professional pool cleaning service for the task. In addition, consider using chemical cleaners on the filter annually to promote continued effective service.

Mineral Problems

Abundance and imbalance of minerals in the pool water will have unfavourable results. You will notice discoloration of the water and the adverse hue may be visible on light-coloured hair and even nails. Clear green, teal or turquoise water indicates the presence of excess copper ions and coffee-brown or purplish hues signify abundance of manganese. Iron contamination can be identified by the brownish colour similar to rust.

This problem is primarily caused by the corrosion of pool system equipment as well as external contaminants. You should use a commercial chelating agent to eliminate the minerals and then clean out the waste using a vacuum. For more help, you may want to contact a pool service for more information.
